The proposed solutions make available highly biocompatible materials to be used for implementation of biomedical devices and active packaging starting from cost effective agrifood wastes by use of green ecofriendly methodologies.

Proteins from largely available by-products of agrifood industry represent a valuable material for application in the food or biomedical sectors. In the solution proposed these proteins that exhibit favorable physical and mechanical properties are combined with simple polyphenol compounds or polyphenol rich extracts from agrifood wastes featuring antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. The resulting materials have been tested for application in wound healing and tissue repair on one side or active packaging for food preservation on the other side.
Another technological solution explored involves use of lignins extracted from byproducts of agrifood industry by treatment with Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES). These have been incorporated as active components in nanofibrous electrospun scaffolds of potential use as advanced wound dressing for chronic skin lesions. Other uses of lignins include preparation of hybrid TiO2-lignin nanoparticles that show a broad UV–Vis protection range and remarkable antioxidant performance in aqueous media.
