Quale bisogno soddisfa

The need for farmers to produce protein-rich grain and silage that can meet the nutritional needs of animals without the need for irrigation and nitrogenous mineral fertilizers.

Descrizione

Evaluate the possibility of introducing triticale-lupin intercropping in dry Mediterranean cropping systems for the production of silage and grain for animal feed. This possibility responds to the need to build cropping systems that, without the need for irrigation and nitrogenous mineral fertilizers, allow the production of food that can meet protein and energy needs while reducing environmental impact in terms of water use and nitrogen loss.

TRL iniziale1) The progress of the analysis of the agronomic results obtained with a biennial open field trial in which a cultivar of Lupinus albus (cv Ares) and a spring cultivar of triticale (cv Oceania) grown pure or intercropped with a density of investment equal to half of that used for pure sowing (50:50) were grown in combination with different nitrogen and phosphorus applications in a Mediterranean environment (lat. 39° 54'N; 8° 22' E). Biomass, soil water content, phenology, yield and yield components have been recorded in both years.
2) The progress of a two years field trials in which a cultivar of Lupinus albus (cv Ares) and a winter cultivar of triticale (cv Ramdam) grown pure or intercropped with a density of investment equal to half of that used for pure sowing (50:50) were grown in combination with different phosphorus applications in a Mediterranean environment (lat. 39° 54'N; 8° 22' E).
TRL attualea) A 3-year data-set on a lupine-spring triticale intercropping grown in a Mediterranean environment aimed at quantifying the effect of N and P fertilization on quantity and value has been statistically analyzed. The complementarity effect of intercropping for biomass and grain quantity and for quality has been quantified via the Partial and Total Land Equivalent Ratios. A manuscript entitled “Triticale-lupin intercrops represent a valid option for low-input systems of Mediterranean” has been submitted to the international, peer reviewed Annals of Applied Biology.

b) Based on the results of the experiment reported in the previous point, a second experiment has been designed with a winter triticale cultivar in place of the spring one . The first year of the experiment has been harvested on 15 July and samples are being processed to determine grain quality, grain yield components and nutritional quality. This experiment will be replicated this year to take into account the environmental effects on the complementarity of the two species and in terms of grain yield and nutritional quality.
TRL finaleAnalysis of the results obtained with the two-year open field experimentation, drafting of a scientific work, possible submission of the work to a peer reviewed journal.
